Celebration of the inauguration of the Blossom of Shalom within the Jerusalem Peace Memorial.

The work of the Friedensmal Foundation

The main part of the Foundation's work is dedicated to the evolving Jerusalem Friedensmal art project. Here you can find pictures and information about it.

The purpose of the foundation is in particular the promotion of art and culture,

  • which can bring into being the processes for the spiritual healing of man and society,

  • which stimulates and promotes peace and freedom in the relations between people and nations, and

  • which symbolizes and supports appreciative understanding between people and nations.

The path to the Foundation

In 1998, the idea of building a "Peace Memorial for Germany" was born in the mind of an artist. Thomas Zieringer did not want to build another admonishing memorial, but he thought that "learning from the past" should mean creating spaces for peace and human dignity. He said that these were spaces in which people could meet honestly and freely on the basis of shared values. It should also not become a religious project with a claim to salvation, but art on the level of the human being, which inspires, encourages and shows the way of a liberation from within. The monument shall be surrounded by a "Threshold of humility": The knowledge of not knowing (according to Socrates) only opens the door to the deeper insight of man about himself and a higher reality. More about this (Spirituality)…

So it should become a
Friedensmal (Frieden=peace), a "going into peace"-Memorial  for man, dedicated to life. Because the affirmation of life and the awareness of an inner holiness is the prerequisite to master the future. A culture expresses itself in its monuments, which in turn have an effect on the culture. That is why it is so important that, in addition to all the admonishing memorials in Germany, such a peace memorial be given its place in the culture of monuments. In 1999, Thomas Zieringer published his book "The Vision of a New Humanity" (Jahn & Ernst Verlag) with these thoughts in order to present them to the public.

In 2001 he founded the association Friedensmal Wendepunkt to find supporters for the idea and to obtain a permit for the construction. After the implementation of the project in Berlin and Fulda failed due to a lack of interest or excessive fears, the right site for the Peace Memorial was finally found in Bensheim-Hochstädten in southern Hesse. It took 9 years from the political preliminary work and the planning of the project to the application for a building permit. In January 2010, the building permit was finally granted and construction work could begin with private funds.

The construction time was 5 years, as numerous difficulties had to be overcome, mainly due to the private nature of the project. Finally, on September 27, 2015, the Jerusalem Peace Memorial was inaugurated in Germany with a school class from the Bensheim Goethe Gymnasium and a class from its partner school in Haifa, Israel. The patron was Mrs Batsheva Dagan from Israel. - The Jerusalem Peace Memorial was realized purely through civic engagement and with the own funds. Let art be free! This should also be an encouragement for people to live their freedom and bring their good dreams to life.

Already on December 3'th 2012,
Mrs. Linde Weiland, 2nd chairwoman of the association Friedensmal Wendepunkt had proposed in the general meeting that the association dissolves after completion of the Friedensmal and a foundation is established, which is responsible for the monument. The legal form of the foundation would be the more suitable form for the further work with the Friedensmal. There was again a long way to go. On January 28, 2021, the time had finally come: Mr. Zieringer's private foundation was recognized by the Regional Council. After 20 years of association work, the former association became the "Friends of the Peace Memorial Foundation".

After 20 years of engagement, the former association became the "Circle of Friends of the Friedensmal Foundation".

Chairman of the Board

Thomas Zieringer-klein

Thomas Zieringer, artist - Whether it is our country's past or our own: Not crushing feelings of shame and guilt are the answer, but a real acceptance of responsibility that is positive and brings more peace into the world. - Here you will find my personal story of how I found the vision of the Peace Marker and how it came into fruition. Board of Trustees

petra-5-kl

Petra Zieringer, Managing Director - I believe in the meaningfulness of the idea of the Friedensmal Monument and I care about reconciliation between people. But above all, I care about real reconciliation between Christians and Jews. Germans should not only talk about it so much, but also act on it.

ludwig-arras-kl

Ludwig Arras, Master Locksmith (retired) - There is more and more division in society: people only think of themselves, and everyone builds their little fortress around themselves. I wish that people would have more respect for each other and for creation.

mordechai

Rabbi Mordechai Mendelson, chairman of the Jewish Chabbad congregation of Karlsruhe, member of the German Rabbinical Council.

Circle of Friends of the Friedensmal Foundation

The Circle of Friends supports the work of the foundation. The Circle of Friends mainly includes former members of the Friedensmal Wendepunkt Association, which has been merged into the Foundation.

Linde Weiland, former chairwoman of the Jewish community of Fulda - The twenty years as chairwoman of the Jewish community made me aware of the need to approach each other with tolerance.

Anton Euler, Pensioner (formerly working at the Mission for the Blind) - The idea of reconciliation appeals to me. For me, it means coming to terms with God and oneself in order to come to terms with one's neighbor. It means breaking down prejudices in order to come closer to one another, to be ready to listen and to accept the other as a human being.

Konrad Kaschek, Hauskeeper and working pensioner - I want to set positive signs and build a bridge between the past and the present. My aim is to contribute to the development of our civilization. I want to help so that it can develop further in peace and freedom.
