Title pages of Jerusalem Post and HaAretz
On March 22, 2013, theJerusalem Friedensmal was inaugurated in Bensheim on the front pages of the Jerusalem Post and HaAretz in Israel. I was in Safed in Israel at the time and Jewish friends living there surprised me with the newspaper (picture). The ad appeared when US President Obama visited the state of Israel before Passover. Internationally, the ad appeared full-page on the back of the magazine or on the back of a title page. I had not expected this unusual size of the ad and the placement on the front pages. The joy was great.
The ad shows the Rose of Shalom. It was in Jerusalem, that it was publicly presented for the first time. The text of the ad „The opposite of the Holocaust is in a sense the idea of Jerusalem” reflects the message embodied by the Jerusalem Friedensmal. In the context of a civilization break, the "idea of Jerusalem" is remembered. So it's more than a memorial to the pain of the past. It's about life - even in the German-Jewish relations - in the present. It's about what was learned from a dark past.
Note: The "Jerusalem Peace Memorial" from the ad was the English translation of the German name "Jerusalem Friedensmal". Today I no longer use this English translation. Also for the international Website I now use the original German name "Jerusalem Friedensmal". Reasons: 1.) This monument is not a memorial. It's not about a "Jerusalem" that has been lost but was there before. 2.) This monument is not located in the city of Jerusalem. The German name "Jerusalem Friedensmal" gives the hint, that the monument is located in Germany.
